Michiko Hirayama, who will turn 100 in 2026 (born in 1926 [Taisho 15]), traveled throughout the Silk Road regions with Ikuo Hirayama. While supporting her husband’s research trips and artistic career, she also pursued her own creative work and collecting activities. Through travel records, essays, and other writings, she also preserved her experiences and reflections in words.
Commemorating the 100th anniversary of her birth, this exhibition introduces the creative journey of Michiko Hirayama, focusing on her paintings from her days at Tokyo Fine Arts School, records of her travels with her husband, publications, as well as her work in printmaking, metal engraving, and jewelry making.
At the same time, “Beautiful Buddhist Images of the Silk Road II” will be held in Exhibition Rooms 1–3. Buddhist statues, including a Buddhist head from Luoyang, will be displayed together with sketches and paintings of Buddhist images created by Ikuo Hirayama.
