Ikuo Hirayama: Painting Flowers — From Sketches

In his later years, Ikuo Hirayama created sketches in watercolor of the small flowers seen from the garden of his studio in Kamakura. In this garden, where various flowers bloomed throughout the seasons, the artist observed them and at times drew inspiration from them as he continued his artistic work. During his many years of research trips along the Silk Road, it seems that the flowers seen from his studio helped soothe Hirayama’s heart. The artist reflected as follows:

“The nature before my eyes speaks to me in different words each day. … The familiar nature around me brings peace to a life in which I had kept running with my eyes closed. … I walked through scorching deserts, climbed frozen high mountains, felt the mysteries of nature, and learned about many different cultures. Yet sometimes I feel that simply watching the changing seasons in the garden visible from my studio in Kamakura may be enough to open the way to enlightenment.”
