On Monday, February 6, 2023, the Turkey–Syria earthquake, with its epicenter in southeastern Turkey, caused severe damage across Turkey and neighboring Syria. Many people lost family members and homes, and even now continue to face hardship in securing food and daily necessities.
Both Turkey and Syria are regions that have played major roles in the history and culture of the Silk Road since ancient times. As a museum deeply connected with the Silk Road, we hope to offer even a small measure of support to those affected by the disaster. With this in mind, we will hold a charity concert proposed by Turkish music performer Kiyoshi Ohira.
Please enjoy traditional pieces, including songs of wandering minstrels, folk songs, and dances, performed on the saz, a traditional Turkish instrument, and the tar, a traditional Azerbaijani instrument. We hope this concert, held amid the distant Silk Road world depicted by Master Hirayama, will offer an opportunity to think of Turkey and Syria.

Kiyoshi Ohira
Turkish music performer
Kiyoshi Ohira has studied numerous folk songs and traditional music in Turkey, Greece, Azerbaijan, and China. He has performed at venues and events including the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan, dedication performances at Toshodaiji Temple and Todaiji Temple, the Ikuo Hirayama Exhibition: Xuanzang and the Path in Search of the Dharma, the Greek play Electra Trilogy, NHK BS’s Byzantine Empire, the Asia Society in New York, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston.
He composed and arranged music for the Syrian play Hail Ta’ih / The Wandering Horse in 2017 and 2022.
He is also a member of Gendai Sangaku, a modern version of sangaku, a form of performing art from the Nara period.
