Autumn/Winter Special Exhibition
“Ikuo Hirayama: Painting Archaeological Sites — From the Middle East to the Mediterranean”
Presented together with the Greek and Roman Art Collection
Japanese-style painter Ikuo Hirayama (1930–2009) is widely known as a painter of the Silk Road and the transmission of Buddhism. He also frequently visited regions around the Mediterranean, including Italy, Greece, and Turkey, leaving behind many paintings of ancient ruins and landscapes.
As a related project to the exhibition “Thermae: Ancient Rome and Japan Connected through Bathing,” to be held this autumn at the Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art, this exhibition presents artworks related to Greece and Rome, together with works by Ikuo Hirayama depicting ancient Mediterranean archaeological sites.
We invite you to enjoy the rich appeal of the ancient Mediterranean world, which shares many cultural elements familiar to Hokuto City, where our museum is located, including hot springs and wine.
