Michiko Hirayama, who turns 100 in 2026 (born in 1926 [Taisho 15]), traveled throughout the Silk Road regions with Ikuo Hirayama, supporting her husband’s research trips and artistic career while also engaging in her own creative work and collecting. Through travel records, essays, and other writings, she also left behind her experiences and reflections in words.
In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of her birth, this exhibition traces Michiko Hirayama’s creative journey, featuring paintings from her days at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, records of her travels with her husband, publications, as well as her work in printmaking, metal engraving, and jewelry/accessory design.
At the same time, Exhibition Rooms 1–3 will present “Beautiful Buddhist Images of the Silk Road II.” The exhibition will feature sketches and paintings of Buddhist statues by Ikuo Hirayama, including the Buddhist head from Luoyang, displayed together with Buddhist sculptures.
