In autumn 2025, to commemorate the 95th anniversary of Ikuo Hirayama’s birth, the museum will present the special exhibition Beautiful Buddhist Sculptures of the Silk Road.
This exhibition introduces the museum’s collection of Buddhist sculptures, gathered over many years by Ikuo Hirayama and his wife, Michiko, and later donated to the museum. These exquisite Buddhist figures came into Hirayama’s possession as he traveled the Silk Road, entrusting his prayers for peace to his brush and creating numerous works along the way.
Highly regarded as precious cultural heritage of global significance, these sculptures have continued to draw renewed attention as research and study from various perspectives deepen their value. From India, Gandhara, Central Asia, China, Southeast Asia, and Japan—
